I’ve been working with various color pencils over the course of a decade. To date, I cannot tell you the BEST type or brand given how personal art can be. Trust me, I’ve been trying to write about this for weeks now. I got VERY overwhelmed.
Truth is, each type serves a purpose based on your artistic vision & style. Hence, it’s difficult to box in something incredibly vast.
However…
I can tell you one thing I’ve learned along the way.
PATIENCE,PATIENCE, PATIENCE!
Depending on the brand you’re using you it will require you to learn pressure control to better handle the pencil. Yes, it matters! Don’t believe me?
Give it a shot & do a value study with me...
Be sure to check out my first impressions vid of Kalour color pencils below! Who knows you might learn about values. Ignore the captions. I don’t know what happened there. It seems like the dokkaebis are at it again.
Open your sketchbook
Set timer on your phone/tablet/laptop for 1-5 mins
Hold pencil like normal
Create a gradient (light to dark or dark to light)
Now do the exercise holding it in the middle & at end
At each grip try going from light pressure to hard
Notice your range of motion on your hand
What are you using more of?
Wrist?
Elbow?
Shoulder?
How much pressure were you using?
Now repeat this exercise the same way using the over & underhand method by consciously bringing your awareness to the pressure of your hand.
How did it go?
What did you notice?
What was easier or harder?
Did you finish within the time frame?
Were you racing against time or did you lose track to understand the technique?
What thoughts were coming up?
Take another 3-5 mins with a timer to summarize your experience.
Yk what? I think it I’ll stop right here for now as I’d like to give you some time to experiment. Just like I did.
Btw, my first set was the standard Crayola 12ct 🙂
If you want to see one of my first piece with it you can check it out below
